Popular Ghanaian highlife musician, Kwabena Kwabena (born George Kwabena Adu), has surprised many by announcing his bid to become the next Student Representative Council (SRC) President at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
Recently, photos and videos have circulated showing the singer interacting with students and campaigning actively on campus. Kwabena Kwabena is not just known for his music anymore — he now wants to represent students and lead them to achieve positive change.
Interestingly, he is not the first celebrity to take this path. In the past few years, more Ghanaian celebrities have been showing interest in student politics. Samini, a famous dancehall artist, became SRC President at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) during the 2022/2023 academic year. Also, Guru, another well-known musician, won the SRC elections at the University of Ghana in 2024. Most recently, Dr Cryme was elected SRC President at Methodist University, Tema Campus in 2025.
Many people believe that celebrities contesting for SRC positions bring excitement and attention to student elections. Their popularity helps them connect easily with students. However, there are also concerns. Some students worry that fame might give celebrity candidates an unfair advantage over regular students who also want to serve.
For Kwabena Kwabena, his journey into student leadership shows a different side of him. It proves that he is passionate about youth development and student welfare, not just about making music.
As the elections draw closer, many are eager to see if he will win and what changes he promises to bring if he gets the opportunity to serve.
